I am trying to combat osteoarthritis with Glucosamine Sulphate, fish oil and Rosehip. Some days are good some I can hardly walk! Have it in my hips and one knee although doc says the knee is coz I walk funny! Thinking of trying an osteopath to see if that will help

Hi i am new to this so please bare with me. I was diagnosed with scoliosis in my mid teens and so have always had problems with my back and joints, by my late twenties my doctor prescribed anti inflammaties to help with the pain, this progressed though out my thirties with added pain killers being changed every few years as pain progressed.
By my fourties i was on tramadol, paracetamol and pregablin as well as the anti inflammaties.
Then at the age of 44 i sufferred a stroke, luckily after a week in itu i came around and had not lost the use of any limbs, but my balance and strength had suffered as well as memory and some cognitive functions.
This meant that with being on warafin i could no longer take anti inflammaties and found out how bad my pain and joints really were.
I was told in December last year that i have OA in both knee's, with the left being more severe.
I believe with twinges i am getting from my hip that it is probably there as well.
Can someone please tell me how i get expect it to progress and of any other treatments i can try , rather than increasing pain killers
Thankyou

Hi, I have suffered from osteoarthritis in my Neck & Back since 2009 and had to retire from work in 2011. I have tried a lot of different pain killers and now I take Gabapentian 1800mg a day, Amatriptaline 30mg a day Pylexia 200mg a day I also take a lot of other tablets for other conditions. Some days I feel that I am not quite with it. Can anyone tell me if there are any side effects that I have to watch for and also how long will it be before the medication harms me in other ways. Thank you.

im on 900mg gabapentin daily, and it has taken a lot of pain away. The list of possible side to this seemed endless. I read the leaflet and did some research online my dr was fab too. I also take 400 mg Brufen prior to busy days or as and when if at home, I also have cocodamol if needed.

I am on 600mg of pregablin, which i believe is in the gabapentin family. There are numerous side effects, i find i can (what i call) phase out if not really concentrating on something. Also the effects if you miss a dose canbe really bad. Messes with your head.
However the flip side is it seems to work for me.

Hi everyone, I have just joined because I have osteoarthritis from my neck to my feet!
I find Pilates the best thing for keeping me mobile, go to a weekly class especially aimed at people with arthritis and osteoporosis.
my GP gives me naproxen and co codamol, which I use only when I can't sleep for pain and I have an excellent osteopath.
i have learned over the years to keep active( especially walking) but to rest between activities.
Does anyone else find the stiffness more hard to cope with than the pain?

I agree Margaret the stiffness is worse than tge pain.
I too try and do what piliates i can, however i have scoliosis as well so some things are limited.
I would like to try an osteopath but have always been told not too because of my scoliosis. Does anyone have any thoughts on that.
Many thanks

I have Osteoarthritis in my Back and Neck for which I take Gabapentan, Amatriptalene and a new drug called Pylexia SR. This a controlled drug and since taking it it has helped me quite a lot. I can be pain free for up to 5 hrs. I still get a lot of pain in my legs and was wondering if this is related to my OS.

I had a hip replacement 16 months ago due to osteoarthritis. I can honestly say it was the best decision I have ever made. Yes I was not looking forward to everything post op, but I am now 100% mobile and after not being able to walk any distances I now enjoy walking again and I've managed to lose 2.5 stones. Totally pain free and I've had lots of comments about how much happier I look - my face was obviously showing my pain. If you have any questions please ask!
