@icecream @Liamk01 My uncle has gained so much weight since starting an antidepressant. It can be so difficult as that doesn't help peoples mental health either.

yes very true , no one tells you what effects these drugs have on a human being , i know you get the little sheet with all the side effects on , but being told by a doctor would help

Hello everyone, I originally wrote about Efexor and weight gain. I gained 2 stone and quickly developed high BP and also cholesterol because of how quickly I piled on 2 stone.
I am having probs. still with my weight and as said before, when I weaned myself off the Lexapro 15mg, I found that just by eating less sweet things and carbs, I was able to drop 2 stone. I looked great, the withdrawals were awful but I did it, However, I have studied alot about SSRIS and they are nasty, if necessary as they cause rebound anxiety some time after one goes off them. I am not here to speak about myself but noted some comments above. Firstly KALMS are alternative tablets for insomnia, to be honest, they don't really work. They also contraindicate with other psychiatric meds that you may be on and it is wise to ask your doctor first. secondly I live in EU so Zoloft is called Serlatine, [both are the same tablet] and it seems they do not cause weight gain, probably the only one that does not. However, sadly I wasn't able to tolerate them. We are all different, what is great for one person, is awful for another. People with depression need Carbs, and we can cut down ok.
I tried to wean off the lexapro again, and was doing fine and then whoooosh, down came this horrific, black depression so I would advise any one reading this to come off an SSRI or antidepressant, any tablet they've been on for a few years with the help of a therapist or Doc. who knows what they are doing.

@icecream @icecream Yes, i have noticed that too, one drug can have a very positive effect on one person and make another gain weight and sleep all day.
Years ago, I was sertraline too. It had no negative impact on me but my friend did, they were sleeping all day and had very bad dirrhea.

I took myself off lithium and sertraline - cold turkey - a few months ago. I become drug resistant fairly quickly so I would never suggest anyone copy this, and please, withdraw at your consultant’s recommended pace.
I found an old care plan from 2012 recently and in it my psychiatrist says I’m responding well to mitazaprine but my weight gain and eating habits are of major concern. Well, I ended up on the above meds shortly afterwards, therefore, I’m guessing my weight must have increased massively in the interim!
I had an appointment today. Told the new psychiatrist about my history with every ssri/ maoi I’ve taken over the past 25 years and how they stop working after a time. I also mentioned the old care plan I found. He said he was willing to try me on mitrazipine again if I kept in mind the weight increase. So, I’ve come away with a low dose and will report back within 12 weeks. In the meantime, he’s begged me to be sensible re: food and attempt some moderate exercise (I have a lot of physical pain going on).
I left his consultion room and instead of returning home, where the urge to go and lie in my darkened bedroom was strong, I took the dog for a walk on the beach. I’m extremely fatigued and have lots of muscloskeletal pain as a result but I’m proud that I achieved it (and the hound is content!). First tablet tonight and I’m already mentally batting off stuff I don’t usually eat! (I don’t have a natural sweet tooth).

I take each day as it comes, try to have a focus for that day. Today is pretty good, but it gives me a nudge every now and again. H

I've tried many different anti-depressants over the years, Cipralex, Cymbalta, Zoloft, Celexa, Wellbutrin, all taken in the morning, and Remeron and Seroquel to take at night to help me sleep. I didn't like Remeron/Mirtazapine because I gained a lot of weight and was always hungry (getting out of bed before falling asleep to grab a plain bun and cookies and eat it in bed) and I have always been of average weight and under control of my food habits.
Remeron otherwise helped a lot. I've been put on Seroquel at night as a mood stabilizer as well as sleep aid. I began 25-50mg as needed and now I'm at 75mg every night. It's such a low dose compared to other people but my eating habits have been horrible the last month. I also have increased my Trintellix to 15mg over a month, but I'm thinking it's the Seroquel.
Is it that any sleep aid is going to make me starving for carbs and sugar and gain weight as a result, or is there something else I can take? Do you think it's the Trintellix? So far I've found no benefit from the Trintellix and I'll likely be switching at my next appointment. Someone mentioned Prozac as a safe (I've had a horrible reaction to Zoloft) and effective SSRI that they were surprised my doctor hadn't tried yet. Does this cause weight gain/loss?
I know it's not all about avoiding weight gain but I get even more depressed when I see extra pounds on me. My family is tall and slim, I've never been overweight and 15 pounds is a lot to add onto my small frame. I'm worried the only meds that can make me better (Remeron) will cause extreme weight gain.
