I am 10 days since hip replacement surgery and experienced itching to be problematic! I decided to take Piriton to help but have experienced an allergic reaction, I think. My upper body soon became covered in a particularly itchy, burning rash. 16 hours on, over night, I have had no sleep and still very itchy. Should I seek help I wonder?

@Mrs Larkin
Yes, you should seek medical advice. You need to know what caused you to have this reaction and what are you allergic to, so you can put it on your red list of allergies when you have any medical treatment. I am not certain if the cement used in joint replacement can cause a delayed allergic reaction. You, or your GP need to query this from your surgeon the surgeon. Hope this helps.

I have had a knee replacement which is now as painful as it was prior to replacement 4 years ago. The other one needs replacing but I'm a long way down the list.
I also had a partial hip replacement after a fall and breaking the ball off the femur.
I am well on the way to recovery (6 weeks post op) and have no pain at all in the hip. I'm almost back to the point I was before the break.

@josie42 I am so sorry for what you are going thru with your pain. I have chronic pain in my spine and have been told by several neurosurgeons that I am inoperable--which is fine with me because I would NOT let anyone do surgery on my back. I have heard too many horror stories and failures that come with it.
I was to the point several years ago, that they were going to put a morphine pump in me. During that time, my insurance changed, and was referred to a new pain specialist. He suggested methadone. I looked at him and said I thought that was only used to wean people off of heroin. He said no, they have been using it for ages to combat pain. I tried it and boy has it been a literal life saver!!! I am able to get up out of bed every morning and function like a normal person. The pain is nothing like it was prior to being prescribed the methadone. It might be something to consider and speak to your doctor about. I do hope you can find some relief too!!

@Mrs E Larkin YES! Please contact your surgeon and explain to him/her what you are experiencing. NO ONE should have to suffer with itching post surgery or any time. I bet you will find you are allergic to one of the medications! Keep us posted!

Hi VickyCoffey, thankyou for your concern! I am waiting on phone call from GP this afternoon, the same one who failed to follow up her advice on phone last Friday! Hopefully she will advise blood test or something positive. I am exhausted after loss of sleep, vomiting, itching etc.
Thankyou to all you caring members of Carenity for you kindness and consideration, will keep you posted! xx

@VICKICOFFEY Hi there, I thought I'd give you an update on my 'allergic reaction' saga! I did get a phone call, earlier last week from my surgery but different GP. She was great and prescribed a strong anti histamine tablet called 'Fexofenadine', along with a soothing lotion called 'Balneum Cream'! They both have really helped and I'm also waiting on blood test result! I'm considering swapping my GP as she was so unhelpful compared to her partner!
I hope you are still pain free on Methodone and keep fighting the good fight my friend in Carenity!

@Mrs E Larkin Thank Goodness! Thats just horrible that your GP was like that. I agree you should swap GP's!! I think some of these Dr's get so hardened to things and unless it affects them, they dont really care!! Good that the other GP cared enough to prescribe you those meds, and tried to alleviate the problems!! I bet its nice to get some relief!! I do hope that if you do switch GP's you let them know exactly why you decided to switch. Nothing will ever change unless we speak up!
I hope you continue to fight the good fight too my friend!

That's really kind of you and you're so right about some doctors acting a bit above themselves! I will make a point of shaming my current doctor so that nobody else will be left with no assistance when they need it most. Take care my friend!

I have rheumatoid arthritis and I had the knuckles replaced in my right hand about 13 years ago and they've been fantastic. Two of my fingers hadn't moved for a couple of years but they did something to reattach the ligament and when I came round and could wiggle my fingers peeking out of the plaster I cried with joy. And the pain was gone. It felt like a miracle.
Covid has delayed the same operation on my left hand, but I'm happy to wait a bit longer for a second miracle to be performed. Amazingly in such a brief time, this has gone from 2 weeks in hospital to day surgery.
I guess we really do live in an age of miracles.
