You have made the right decision! I had a TKR last year after 3 years of being in pain from bone on bone arthritis (had no cartilage on my left knee)..i did NOT want to have the operation as i felt that my life would not Be the same and i was right...my family kept nagging me to get my knee done and in the end i gave in....the hospital was horrible and i had the surgery by epidural...i had told the surgeon that i suffered from anxiety but was made to wait all day before going into theatre. At 5.30pm and was terrified..although i could not feel anything i could still hear all the noises of hammering/sawing/banging and was in a lot of pain afterwards...i ended up being given anti-depressants to help with this (although i only took them for a short time) my knee is now not painful but stiff and doesn’t move like my own right knee so i have to be careful with it...i would have been happier carrying on with the pain than this...do what you feel is best
for you.

Well it’s now 2years since i had my left knee replaced and finally i have come to realise that it was for the best to have this procedure done!
I am now able to walk (and run for short distances) am back to training with weights (although not heavy ones anymore but just dumbbells) and can do a full squat now.
I have carried on with the exercises given to me by the physio and usually do them while i am waiting for the kettle to boil (which is often lol) i have found that doing
the exercises really does help and keeps my new knee flexible so will keep this routine up for the forceable future.

I had a total right hip replacement done, twice! (The second time was due to a fall at the bark park and I hit so hard it knocked my first one loose!) Its wonderful to NOT have the pain I was experiencing. If I could give anyone advise on what to do if someone has to have a replacement done, is to exercise, exercise, exercise, and when you are done exercising, exercise some more!!! A friend gave me that advise and was so glad he did! I bounced back extremely fast with both my replacements!!! When I would watch tv, I would stand with my walker and just march in place--the high knee lift kind. Also, purchase a few bags of cheap peas or corn. They work wondering when time to ice. About the time they thaw out, your icing time is up. Toss that package back in the freezer and grab another for the next icing! I think the biggest and best thing is to get a raised toilet/seat to place over the commode. I am 6'1" and having those extra inches worked wonders when having to get up and down from using the restroom!

Well good for you Vicky! I have seen so many who have had replacement joints but have gone home from hospital and just sat in a chair despite being told to walk a bit further every day (my Mum was one who didn’t bother to walk and she ended up with blocked arteries leading to her death) my mother-in-law had her hip replaced 3 years ago and did the same thing now she is unable to walk.
I didn’t want to end up the same as them so was back to exercising almost straight away after leaving hospital..yes it was hard at first and i was in a lot of pain worse was I couldn’t sleep but carried on exercising throughout this rather unpleasant episode.
I was not given any *aids* so had to manage without any help..getting into the shower was difficult and i am still hesitant when i step in and out as i am terrified of falling over and breaking the implant.
Last year i got back in the saddle for a horse ride and it felt so good as i was a keen rider but hadn’t ridden for a while also started trying to go out jogging again but ended up walk/jogging so as not to put to much strain on my new knee..it’s good not to be in pain anymore.

On Tuesday 26th April this week, I fell and fractured left hip. I suspect this is due to my Osteopenia as I was told by hospital staff that I was young at 63 for such a fracture! As result was upgraded to hip replacement which was done yesterday.. Now for Physiotherapy I imagine. Any advice appreciated x

Hello @Mrs E Larkin, thank you for your comment and I'm sorry to hear about your hip! I've moved it to this discussion in our muscles and joints group for more visibility.
Hi everyone, I hope you're doing well. For those of you who have been through a joint replacement, especially a hip replacement, can you share any advice with Mrs E Larkin? What was the operation and recovery like?

Your experience, Jackykins is very promising for me. I had my surgery 5 days ago 30/4/21 and will be going home tomorrow! I hope my experience living with a new left hip mirrors yours.
