I have read all of the above comments of several people with OA. It is very debilitating indeed, but like some ones said above, you have to be positive. It really does help. Taking Paracetamol 500mgs 4 times a day over long term, causes substantial Liver Damage. How ever painful, exercises are the best pain reducers. You will find them hard at first, but if your physiotherapist gives you the right exercises, you have to follow them through regularly and persevere. Its o good staring them then lapsing or missing a few days. You have to be dedicated to doing them every sigle day.Sure, walking is painful, but you still have to start of slowly for short distance, gradually increasing the time and the distance will make it easier. Hydrotherapy is very good. I don't mean Aqua aerobics. If you can afford to go to Private Hydro therapist if you can not get referred to on the NHS, it is worth taking a few sessions to get to know the correct way and the right exercises to do in the water. You are weightless I water and you can do exercises I the water with much less pain than on the ground. As well as OA sufferer, I have also had 5 Neuro/spinal surgeries, the last 2 for Scoliosis which was developed as a result of multiple slipped discs in the past. I walk with 2 crutches and that is permanent. I am very positive and dedicated and I do all the exercises taught by the physio every single day and also in the water, taught by the hydro therapist in the local pool twice a week. Believe me, exercises done correctly and regularly does help a great deal. Being positive is an additional bonus. So who ever has thought of suicide or are getting depressed, get out of the rut and be positive to help your self and you will succeed. I am not saying you will be cured or will be pain free, But YOU WILL be able to manage your daily life much better.

Hi i have osteo in my knees supposedly now only in one as the other one was replaced in 2010 , became out of line so was realigned and kept in a brace for months , but 2014 after an MRI was showing out of line again ,i was due to have it looked at and possibly replaced last year but because of issues with my blood and then moving nhs area it didnt happen . I have now seen a new chap at a different hospital and after xraying my knee he says its not out of line , why do i have so much pain round my knee ?, i have now had MRI on spine and have been referred to a spine specialist , as far as i am aware my knee is still the problem , i have ask the KNEE surgeon to get my images from the other hospital if only for my piece of mind , yes i do get down and maybe a little depressed at times , i do walk most days when you have dogs you have to , but i also know from my own experience that depression is not something that you can just get out of the rut and be positive about ,constant pain is never easy and some do cope better than others , you dont see a depressed person with a label or plaster on their head .

Hi Barbara
Well done you! Keep it up....let us know how the gym goes. Even little bits are better than nothing.
I try to make myself go to yoga every 2nd week. Thats all its on. Its organised by our arthritis care branch. Prop my crutches in the corner and get on with it.
My New Year resolution is ......Rose that takes this class has another ordinary class {as opposed to one for people with arthritis}has another class...actually it is closer to me. I've been once or twice to this one before and she adapts some of the exercises for me. Things like some stand and do stretches and she makes me hold the back of a chair and do them. They lie down to do some exercises....well with 2 crutches I cant do that LOL I suppose I could but couldn't get up again LOL So she adapts some exercises for me sitting on a chair while they are doing the ones on the ground. Thats not a big part of it anyway. We only have a class every 2nd week because thats all the branch can afford so getting to it at last
NEW YEAR RESOLUTION
The weeks in between the Arthritis Care Yoga I will go to her class closer to me. That means I'll be there once a week. Not once a fortnight
I give you permission to give me a cyber kick up the bum and make sure I keep it up LOL Unless of course i have a hospital appointment or something similar that clashes with it.
Love
Eileen

Hi everyone. I am a newby to this group. So wish I had found it earlier.
I have been diagnosed now with osteoporosis but am still trying to continue working( only part time) at least for as long as I can but it is becoming more difficult. I can understand people's comments about getting depressed. On the days I don't work it's not unusual that I don't see or speak to another human being. Gets very lonely sometimes.
Am trying to decide which exercise benefits most people with oa? Is it just personal choice? I already do swimming once a week, don't really want to do more of that but any other suggestions very much appreciated.

Hi Jenni
Welcome, I hope you find some tips and some help here. You should. We all have pain of one kind or another so keep checking the posts.
OA....well the main thing is it has to be low impact exercise not high impact that will make things worse.
Get in Touch with Arthritis Care, Freephone or online and they have a booklet on exercise....you might find something in that that you fancy.
Walking is very good for OA.
Have a look at there booklet online or get them to send you one

I had a hip replacement 16 months ago due to osteoarthritis. I can honestly say it was the best decision I have ever made. Yes I was not looking forward to everything post op, but I am now 100% mobile and after not being able to walk any distances I now enjoy walking again and I've managed to lose 2.5 stones. Totally pain free and I've had lots of comments about how much happier I look - my face was obviously showing my pain. If you have any questions please ask!

Hi everyone,
I'm a newly signed up member to Carenity .. I'm 67, years young; but unfortunately, like so many of you; I also suffer with Osteo Arthritis. I hope to learn from the group; also have some input, while discovering (hopefully) a way forward to increased mobility? Help!
Before this debilitating illness took hold; I enjoyed an active athletic lifestyle; although these day's; I'm more of an invalid than athlete. I'm not giving in to this condition; and intend fighting against it as long as possible.
Glad to have found this group; and hope to take an active roll in some of your discussions.
Acceptance appreciated
