Hi Figaro
If you have only just been diagnosed with Osteoarthritis, my advice to you is, to be as active as you possibly can, walk as much as you can, exercise if you are able to, swimming is very good and less painful to exercise in the water. Avoid sitting for a long period of time, every 20 minutes get up and walk around the house. Other than the Anti inflamatory drugs that cause stomach problems, there are a lot of natural therapies available. Examples of a few are, Turmeric, Bromlain, Boswella, Ginger Devil's Claw Green Lippid Muscle, Glucosamine sulphate, Fish oils to name a few. You will need to check with your GP first to ensure that they do not interfere with your medications or any illnesses or conditions you migh have. Read up on "Turmeric for health" website before you consult your GP so that you can arm yourself with any questions you might have to ask him/her.
Hope this is helpful. Good luck.

I use knee supports called gym form it's the best aid I've used after so many. My knees are shot in next week for first one to get done but these knee supports have really helped

Hi had knee replacement and my advice to anyone is to hold onto your knees as long as possible. I had it done last May and it is still not right. Surgeon tells me it takes full year before it is fully ok. I am bit worried as I still have swelling and find it very difficult on stairs. I know my condition is a little different than others having knee replacement as all my bones are in bad way. To top it all had neck fusion and was doing great and was then in an accident and since then most days the pain is unreal. Swimming is the best form of exercise as you don't feel the pain in the water.

If you have pain in the thumbs, wear finger-less gloves to keep your hands warm and still allow delicate control. only a few pounds, or cut the ends off some old gloves. Phil

Hi
I had 2 hip replacements, had 1 knee replacement almost months ago and it is still not right.
If you have just been diagnosed with arthritis keep moving Use it or Lose it but low impact exercise nothing high impact. eg. Walk don't run or jog that's what I mean about low/high impact exercises.
You can keep on doing thing......not the same way as you used to do them but an adapted way. How do you feel now and where were you told you had the arthritis?

I had a hip replacement 16 months ago due to osteoarthritis. I can honestly say it was the best decision I have ever made. Yes I was not looking forward to everything post op, but I am now 100% mobile and after not being able to walk any distances I now enjoy walking again and I've managed to lose 2.5 stones. Totally pain free and I've had lots of comments about how much happier I look - my face was obviously showing my pain. If you have any questions please ask!
