Fruit drinks are the worst possible choice for diabetics as it is pure concentrated sugars. Try low sugar squash or non sugar drinks alternatives. There are plenty alternatives to Metformin that you GP should be aware some work slightly a different way. If you are having stomach or bowel issues perhaps injections are the best option. There are several new injections that have a positive effect on losing weight that may be worth considering if you suffer from such joys.
Finally unless your GP has specialised in Diabetes can I suggest you get a referral to the Diabetic Clinic in your hospital. They have excellent consultants that are specialised in Diabetes and have excellent facilities and trained personnel, e.g. Diabetic Dietician who could give some excellent advice over drinks!

Your GP should be able to offer you strips and lancets etc. It may be a personal thing with your GP so it may be worth changing him/her. I had one who refused a blood test because of my concerns of Diabetes, changed GP and it all changed. Had the same problem with E45, so essential to prevent you feet and hands drying out. Of course if you feet skin splits and infection sets in, you could end up with amputation. So short term thinking of your GP saving money could end up with massive costs and disability.

Metformin works for me, sure I get the Trots now and again. Drink wise I use Concentrate Robinsons Sugar Free Orange, it's nice. My big problem is these "Healthy" foods all look boring to me, nut's, beans or buckets of Veg don't do anything for me.

Try stir fries. They are my answer to fast food. I cut up all my own peppers and onions etc, but most supermarkets do ready cut up packets. I use olive oil or sesame oil to fry in and add cooked chicken, salmon, sausage or any other sort of meat to hand. If it is pre cooked, you just pop it in for a few minutes to warm thorough. Delicious! I don't use dressings, as that is where the sugar comes in!

Hello @steven elvin it has been quite a while since my last post, so I hope that you have had some good news following your blood test and that there is better news about your liver, they told me I had a fatty liver but did nothing about it,,that's life!
You mention in a previous post about the side effects of metformin, did you start off gradually onto them? I have read on another helpful site, Diabetes,co,uk if you jump into/on to much too quickly it can have these things happen, on person, came off and the restarted back on a slower plan and has been ok with the tablets, I hope this little bit of info might be helpful, ttfn from Karen

Hi, does anyone have any experience with metformin? I am getting terrible side effects (diarrhoea, sorry) and thinking of trying something else to control my blood sugar levels. Can anyone recommend other meds that works well? Any advice is appreciated!! thanks x
