My wife was on metformin for a number of years ( as I am ) but she had problems with dry itchy skin and she would scratch until she bled particularly overnight when she slept. After trying a number of creams without success we decided to stop some tablets to see what would happen. The first one we stopped was the metformin and the result was immediate she stopped itching and one of the creams we had previously tried helped her skin. The diabetic nurse at our gp's wanted her to go back on it but we refused as she is on insulin injections anyway. The metformin hasn't caused me any problems but she was just getting worse and the drastic measure of stopping the metformin worked.

I have been on Metformin since being diagnosed with Diabetes in the 90’s..For the last few years I have suffered with irritable bowel which is not under control as yet. My blood sugar is under control, I am thinking after reading this article maybe the Metformin could be irritating my bowel , I will discuss this with my GP.

Having been forced to take the liquid metformin it does affect the stomach but with addition stomach remedies to protect it the problem was resolved. Have to agree with 50% of diabetes patients are thin but are age related diabetes. It seems these days bashing overweight people has become the norm in society and medicine which is not the cause with many sufferers. Interesting point a consultant told me that metformin has life extending benefits beyond diabetes.

Hi I been taking metformin now for 7 years since I was diagnosed with Diabetes 2. I am not obese, it is hereditary my parents had this when they entered their 60s, just like I was when I turned that glorious older age.

I haven't noticed any bad symptoms and take 2 tablets in morning and 2 tea time, no side effects.
