Type 2 Diabetes and the Coronavirus - questions, concerns, precautions?

@Courtney_J I'm not particularly worried. I think that maybe we could be vulnerable because being ill may make it more difficult for us to manage our glucose levels and some of us may have complications or related conditions. But on the positive side, I think we're a strong bunch and we're tough enough to face the virus as we're already accustomed to monitoring our health and how we're feeling. Personally I haven't seen any specific information for diabetics, so I've just been following the general guidelines. Avoiding the shops, washing hands, staying home.

I was wondering if anyone has any advice I am type 2 but I have to go to work as my school is a hub now I am diet and exercise only but I am still concerned as we all are should I be taking any extra precautions apart from social distancing and regular hand washing

 So here's my predicament I have heart failure with 20% heart function following a heart attack and triple heart bypass in November 2018, I have type 2 diabetes for 15 years and mild COPD.

As such I fall into a high-risk group who would experience severe complications if I were to become infected however, I do not fall into the high-risk group that the government have announced for people who are at risk of catching covid 19.

So the only option that seems to be available to me is to Self isolate however.t his leaves me in a dilemma where I am not entitled to benefits because I have chosen to self isolate and not been advised by the government to do so.
Although the advice that was being given was that people with my conditions should be staying at home.

I do not appear to be eligible for sick pay because I'm not sick, I do not believe the care company I work for say they are not eligible for this 80% of my salary because they are a key service and are not laying people off, I cant complete a self-isolation form because I don thave symptoms I can't claim benefits because I don have the virus and Govt have not said I must stay at home.

So it seems my choices are return to work, despite guidance from govt and risk of dying if I get it or choose to self isolate and have no money from anywhere.

I can't get guidance from anywhere because either service are not answering calls or returning calls/emails including, 111, CAB, Benefits Advice, Specialist/ Consultant, GP or local MP.

I feel upset and being to decide do I my life and return to or stay home with no income to pay bills and buy food 

If anyone can give advice I would be grateful. 

@Woolley23‍  I think if we are high risk we are supposed to receive a letter or message from the NHS by Sunday. Have you had anything from them?

@Branoc I would think that you would be high risk with only 20% heart function and COPD! The NHS set up a sit where you can register as high risk if you haven't been contacted. Have you tried that? 

No not heard but based on what I've read the govt have released a list of  those most at risk contracting covid 19,  those with low immunity  (group 1).

Having heart failure, diabetes or mild copd or any combination of these only puts you at risk if dying if you get it.( group 2)

Group one = 1. 5 million

Group 2 = 19 million

So you can see why we're not covered by shielding guidance.

Hi all, I know my results I am about to show you are high, but does that put me in the C Virus ' at Risk group' ? I haven't as yet received a letter advising the 12 week Isolation. Any advice welcome please.

It doesn't appear so.  Only those with low immunity due cancer, medical etc considered high risk.  But we are vulnerable group as risk of complications.  I've managed to get a sick note for work for 4 weeks after a battle otherwise I would have had to go to work as a carer.  If I got it there's a good chance I would die due to heart failure, copd and diabetes was not eligible for anything cos not considered the highest risk group.  Good Luck 👍

I am concerned as I am type 2 diabetic though controlled through diet not medication. I work in a GP surgery, not patient facing but still in the environment with patients and clinical staff. I'm not happy about being in work, would rather stay safe at home. I also have Hashimotos thyroiditis, so my body is fighting 2 chronic diseases. Would you recommend I stay home?
