Hi Devon55, the best place to contact when you have a lung condition is British Lung Foundation if you have not already done so. Not all people with COPD get it from smoking, it can be inherited like Asthma. I have diagnosed COPD or chronic airway restriction in simple terms. There are other lung conditions that can cause similar symtoms so you need to be investigated thoroughly. Healthunlocked has a COPD site as do a lot of USA websites. Breathing difficulties can be caused by the heart too. Best wishes

I was diagnosed with Copd & irregular heart beat at the same time. Not saying yours is connected but I found British heart foundation .org have a great source of info as often the heart is connected with alot of people it's free to sign up and a monthly magazine packed with healthy living tips recipes real life activities to get involved in & help groups helped me in learning to live & cope day to day .i picked their magazine up in my doctors surgery. there is a list of literature you can order free including breathing & copd. with their support I'm back in full time work in a factory. some days are abit of a struggle still but I'm managing with the right inhalers now.A year ago I couldn't walk to the end of my garden now my lung function has improved 10% the key is staying positive and not over exerting myself & taking a breather when I need it.

My own COPD is largely self inflicted through smoking but working for FAS and enhaling cement dust for several years did not help. The worst part about it is not the exhaustion or the sleep deprivation or even the lack of self esteem, but the lack of human contact makes me almost suicidal

Well Ruby13, you summed it up nicely. The key is to remain positive, stay within your own limits of fitness with a little help from the experienced medics to manage this long term illness, there is no hard and fast rules but be guided by your own body. Good news you were able to go back to work if only to give you a moral boost and feel somewhat normal, plus company.

Hello RobertLondon, are there any breatheasy groups in your area ? Sometimes your Gps surgery has info like that. Plus GPs or practice nurses can refer you to gyms for pulmonary rehab or ongoing lung health courses, this would bring you into contact with others in the same situation. In our city there is even a ambulance service to get you to the gym. Not everywhere has these services but worth asking in your area.

Hi Devon55, I was diagnosed with COPD 25 years ago and 7.5 years ago I had part of my lung removed. I can still get around pretty well although some things are a struggle.I dont know the extent of your condition but I find its important to exercise regularly (im not talking the gym if its not your thing) Ask your GP to refer you to "PARS"they provide organised physical activity sessions you can do at your own pace. You WILL benefit.

Hi, Does anyone know of any other treatment other than inhalers (which I find useless anyway) that can cut the number of chest infection that I'm getting now with my COPD.

Hi Taosmum, If the inhalers don't work well for you, maybe the dr could find alternatives.Another way is to try and build up your immunity system with things like vitamin C. Keeping lungs active so airways are kept clear also lessens the amout of infections. Sadly some people get more infections than others

hi im jimmy
ive had copd for more than 30 years i am on two inhalers Seretide 500 and Incruse ellipta 55 which seem to be working for me at the moment.
i suffer a lot with lung infections which i seem to pick up very easy.
i try to keep fit as much as possible i go to gym 3 times a week and that helps me alot, my biggest probelm at the moment is walking i cant walk very far without becoming breathless but i keep trying.i have a stairlift as i have a probelm getting up the stairs its a great help. i am76 now so i should not be complaining. According to the news vitamin D can be a big help to prevent infections, might be worth a try if all else has failed.

Hi, I have just been diagnosed with COPD , I have struggled since oct thinking it was ashma. I have been given the right inhaler now so hopefully I will start to see a difference in my health. I have never smoked and so was bewildered as to why I have this . I don't know anything about it and so any advice will be gratefully received. My doctor gave me some internet sites and I have sent for some information.
