i have had steroid injections into my knee where I have osteoarthritis several times. The first lasted for nearly six years before the pain came back. The second never really worked but I’ve had a great deal of relief from the latest one which I had a year ago! I also had one into my ankle a year ago which has really taken the pain away.

I have had numerous steroid injections in my spine, shoulders, and thumb over the years. What they don't tell you is too many steroids will weaken your bones! I broke my tibia just walking due to my bones becoming weak from all the steroid injections.
Sometimes the injections worked, sometimes not! The most painful injection I ever endured was into my thumb. I would NEVER get another there!
I never experienced any other side effects/affects from the injections. No weight gain, high blood pressure, etc. Just weakened my bones!!! I highly recommend people be extremely cautious receiving these injections.

@VICKICOFFEY Hi I have osteoarthritis in spine, shoulders, knee & now hands over the years I also have had lots of injections in spine & shoulders as you some worked some didn’t. They were stopped they said due to funding I found out while ago that they won’t give them for the reason you state I feel at times that it’s a case of take the painkillers & get in with it, maybe a negative attitude but that’s the way I feel.
I too had a fall in 2019 2 days before Xmas broke my ankle in 3 places I now have pins. Staples & rod in my leg I fell off a swivel chair
i have been told my knee needs replaced & was offered injection until my op but have declined because of the info on weakens bones that they don’t tell you xx

I have had three so far, one a year. The first one really worked the other two were a waste of time and very painful unlike the first one. I'm not going to both any more.

I've had 2 in my right thumb.
The first one was fine. I was pain free after 2 weeks and lasted for about 6 months. Pain gradually started to come back, so I had another 11 months after the 1st one.
This time I had an immediate reaction to it. Pain travelled up my arm, then arm went burning hot with intense itching. Then I had a measles type rash on my arm that lasted for 24 hours.
I wasxok in myself though

Hi. New to the group,I have ostiiarthritis plus sciatica and tendonitis. For this happy arrangement I'm on morphine patches ,have been for around 20 years. Last night which makes the 3rd Time ever I was cold turkey as the heat just peels away the patches by making me sweat more moist than anything . But I have an arrangement that I have 4extra 5mg patches for as and when I need them cos if you run out before the alloted date boy ,are you in trouble. And going cold turkey at the thanks to the NHS is just great. The hell can i do to stop them coming off my arm , and they are taped on. But that's my night last night ,shaking twitching sweating as the house is like an oven an to top it all, I've been in a flare up for the last week. So if any one out there goes through the same ,ehatr do you do if you have no patch?????

Hi, all I can say is the meds help for a while, it's all about knowing what your pain tolerance is. And no t taking meds all the time. Stretches physiotherapy etc always made mine worse 1 hour session would put me on my back for 2 days. Every week for 6 months they never listen when you tell them.

If your osteoarthritis is extremely painful, steroid injections can be a solution for relieving pain, especially in the smaller joints, like you fingers or knees.
The advantage of these injections is their reactivity: the improvement happens withing hours and can last several weeks and even months.
The drawback, however, is quite considerable: steroid injections can cause serious side effects, among which weight gain, high blood pressure, greater risk of infection, etc.
Have you already had steroid injections? In which joint? How quickly did you feel the positive results and how long has it lasted or did it last? What about side effects? Have you had any?
