I found some of our orthopaedic specialist don’t like doing them I have arthritis in my ankles as well my wrists and knee replacement . I have had many steroid jabs over the years. But the last time i had to wait six months for a steroid injection it was cancelled twice and the last time I had to sit and wait for 6 hours.. A different doctor did it this time and she clearly wasn’t keen on them and put the injection in a different place .It didn’t work so now I am having real mobility problems.i don’t know what to do for the best.

@Margarita_k I have had numerous injections in my spine (spine mostly) and shoulders (one in each shoulder), and left thumb(definitely the most painful and only one injection!). I never experienced any side effects, EXCEPT one major one-- I broke my tibia just walking! I had so many injections over the years in my spine it made my bones weak!!
The injections for me were hit or miss. They either gave me some relief, or none at all. The relief lasted anywhere from a week to several months. I just wish they would have told me about making bones weak and brittle. I don't recall the dr's EVER stating any side effects/affects from the injections. Thankfully this was years ago, and I haven't had any steroid injections in my spine since!! I don't know that I would EVER have another injection in my thumb joint. The joint is small and the same amount of steroid goes in that they use on other larger joints--VERY painful and NO relief at all. My shoulders did have a little relief, but it only lasted a couple of weeks.

I too had multiple steroid injections in my spine. I was not informed of the thinning of the bones either. I had them all as private patient on my Health Insurance. I suppose it was money for them, and no advice given about precautions for thinning bones. I now have Osteopenia and just 3 points away from Osteoporosis. Wish i was informed. Being a nurse myself, I should have known better. But the agony was unbearable and carried on having the injections.

@nineteen_gale Sorry you have to go through this as well. I wish the medical community (ie; Doctors) would treat it's patients like they would want to be treated and advise patients the drawbacks along with the benefits to these injections! It would have made a huge difference! I would not have been in agony for weeks with a broken leg!! I guess hind sight is always 20/20!!

@caramia Be careful with the oral steroids. I know a LOT of people that put on extra weight with them, causing their arthritis to worsen due to the weight! I was always lucky when I took oral steroids, as I never gained the weight. I have had a few friends put on close to 100 pounds while taking them!!!!

Ive had 3 injections in my thumb joint on one hand. The first was amazing -after one day of serious pain I then had 4 months pain free and then several weeks when it deteriorated. The next one hardly made any effect and after a month was as back where I started. I was told this hadnt been an ultrasound guided one - so basically playing stick the tail on the donkey - only with my hand! Final one had even less effect and now 6 weeks later pain is back to where I started and possibly worse. Ive been asked to go for a face-face review - but I wont be having anymore injections in that hand. I presume I will be signed off as Im not prepared to consider surgery at this time - partly because Im on a 2 year Chemo regime for my M.S. so will have low immunity already and partly because Im not prepared to have the mobility in my hand restricted as Im an administrator typing away 8 hours a day and also drive to work and back.
My GP refused to put me on any medication as I was under 60 when this started and he felt the long term side effects were too bad to start me on those. Im only 61 now and the thought of being in this pain ( even tho Im told the degeneration isnt too bad ) for the rest of my life is soul destroying.

Steroids contribute to your bones crumbling so it has nothing to do with funding. Arthritis sufferers should not be having no more than 6 injections a year. You all want to heal yourself stop pumping your bodies full of chemicals and research and study what is actually good for your health. I have Fibromyalgia Arthritis B12 Deficiency, Auto immune disease, Hip Dysplasia and 16 operations to date. Pregablin and Gebapatin are epilepsy tablets why give a non epilepsy sufferer these when they are designed to cause brain tremors. Cut out all meat and dairy. Dairy causes mucus in your joints and lungs FACT Hence Arthritis and Bronchitis. Plant based vegan diet and medicinal cannabis. Im speaking from being vegan the last 4 yrs and medicinal cannabis the last year. I also have a diploma in Medicinal Cannabis and Ayurvedic medicine. Flare ups have reduced I sleep like a baby every night I am more active and have a better quality of life. All these chemicals you put in the body mask the problem not get to the root cause. You all want to heal start researching the ingredients you put in your body daily including the chemical prescribed tablets you will be shocked. Also Naproxin rips the lining from your stomach. FACT. As the saying goes you are what you eat and most health problems are caused by man made pharmaceutical drugs, environmental factors, poisons in vaccines, the food you eat amongst a whole lot of other stuff. Every vitamin we need to build our immune system and health are all in your plant based foods whether it be fruit or veg. They say being vegan causes B12 Deficiency well that's a crock of crap. I had a B12 Deficiency years before I went vegan and now I maintain my B12 levels with a plant based diet. Don't just take my word for all this. Go and research for yourselves the info is out there. And anybody that has taken the experimental gene therapy not licensed jab you have just messed your whole immune system up. It's MRNA messenger that contains nano technology aborted 14 week old male dna cells called MRC5 (look it up) as well as chimpanzee kidney dna...your own body is now going to start attacking itself. Over 1 million adverse reactions from this death jab that main stream media haven't reported to you and thousands of deaths....Look on VAERS website. The evidence is all out there you just have to research. Good luck all I'm now leaving this site as its not beneficial to me but I hope I have been to you with this post even if its just one person that takes on board all of the above and look to heal themselves instead of relying on a corrupt system that don't give a toss about humanity especially when convid 19 is the biggest crime hoax and mass genocide against humanity.

Ve had the steroid in knees from GP I’m aloud one every 3 months so it’s one knee at a time and GP uses the. Man made synthetic steroid. Which has helped with worse knee.
However, I had a steroid injection at sports clinic for a shoulder injury, trapped nerve which was not the synthetic one. I didn’t have a pain in any joint for 6 months and felt totally able to do everything. But at £150 plus not in my price range as a retiree and widow. I wish NHS would use it. I managed to swim three times a week, walk, and lost over 3 stone because I could move!

I have osteoarthritis a meniscus tear and cyst in my right knee. I believe it helped but only 50% I take cocodamol and I have really good physio. I wanted to try it, to help me daily it helps me get around but I am still in too much pain to stand for long. It was worth trying and I am hoping to have a stronger one so it will relieve more pain. I dont want an operation and keep being told I am too young for a k we replacement.

Hi. New to the group,I have ostiiarthritis plus sciatica and tendonitis. For this happy arrangement I'm on morphine patches ,have been for around 20 years. Last night which makes the 3rd Time ever I was cold turkey as the heat just peels away the patches by making me sweat more moist than anything . But I have an arrangement that I have 4extra 5mg patches for as and when I need them cos if you run out before the alloted date boy ,are you in trouble. And going cold turkey at the thanks to the NHS is just great. The hell can i do to stop them coming off my arm , and they are taped on. But that's my night last night ,shaking twitching sweating as the house is like an oven an to top it all, I've been in a flare up for the last week. So if any one out there goes through the same ,ehatr do you do if you have no patch?????

Hi, all I can say is the meds help for a while, it's all about knowing what your pain tolerance is. And no t taking meds all the time. Stretches physiotherapy etc always made mine worse 1 hour session would put me on my back for 2 days. Every week for 6 months they never listen when you tell them.

If your osteoarthritis is extremely painful, steroid injections can be a solution for relieving pain, especially in the smaller joints, like you fingers or knees.
The advantage of these injections is their reactivity: the improvement happens withing hours and can last several weeks and even months.
The drawback, however, is quite considerable: steroid injections can cause serious side effects, among which weight gain, high blood pressure, greater risk of infection, etc.
Have you already had steroid injections? In which joint? How quickly did you feel the positive results and how long has it lasted or did it last? What about side effects? Have you had any?
