Post-lumpectomy pain

Hello all, how are you today? Did you experience pain, numbness, or restricted movement after your lumpectomy? Even years later? Have you talked with your doctor about it? Is there anything to soothe the pain? Feel free to share here, we're all here to help one another!

Hello.  I still suffer pain from scar tissue after lumpectomy and quite often I feel a tightness from scar tissue under  my arm from lymph node removal.   My breast nurse suggested using the arm i. e. swimming and stretching  to improve range.  With breast scar tissue she suggested massaging area but it seems that in the main just got to live with it basically.

Hello Joysteph to me what you describe is quite normal. often it is quite tight round  the scar:.Just  after surgery I would panic thinking I had got another lump- but really it was tight skin. Also when you move your arm - still that feeling of discomfort from where lymph nodes were removed. There is not much you can do about it - I had massage  after water retention in the breast and that eased it slightly. Also I still suffer from pain in the upper back when I bend for a period of time - like ironing - I think this is damage from radiotherapy. 

I have recently developed problems in my arm and shoulder and I think I may have developed a thing called fibrosis which can be damage to tissue from radiation.  I had an MRI but due to COVID-19 I can't access my gp or physio.   My GP did say what was going on was treatable and don't get to freaked out.  I have discovered that it is advisable to continue with gentle exercises to encourage freedome of movement of this area for at least 2/3 years after treatment.

Hello - sorry for your pain but as the others are saying it’s part of the process. I still have some pain where the scar is and under my armpit. I also have pain in my ribs. My GP checked it out and couldn’t feel anything abnormal but I will mention it to my breast cancer doctor in my yearly appointment. When that will be I don’t know with this pandemic.  As the others say some massage from a qualified nurse at your breast cancer centre may be of help. Ask the questions and see if they can help.
