I was a springboard diver and swimming champion several years ago... At the age of 14, I hit a diving board; my first seizure occurred 2 years' later at the age of 16. There were many reasons for the seizure i.e. stress from competitions, school exams, hormones/puberty, tiredness and more.
I have had epilepsy now for 46 years and believe that I have become stronger after each seizure. Having epilepsy has given me patience, willpower and understanding, and I now advocate and educate others on social media. Do not give up hope, remain positive and remember, there's always someone worse off than you!

Hi everyone, I hope it's ok that I comment here, I'm new on the site. I had one seizure as a child which occurred near the stairs at home and I ended up falling down the stairs... which caused quite a few injuries. I also had another near a swimming pool once where I fell in and nearly drowned.Luckily there were lots of people around to come save me! Epilepsy is difficult for sure but it can occasionally make for a good story.

@EPandMe Its great to have another new Member; welcome to the site!
Sorry to hear about the seizure occuring near the stairs and the bad fall. Being near swimming pools was always my fear when stopped from swimming and after being a champion swimmer. I understand the situation of almost drowning as I've nearly drowned 3 times in a bath due to seizures.
Feel free to add me to your Friend's List and know I am on social media where I can join you into some epilepsy groups to meet friends and get more advice.

I am 42 years old and my mother noticed something odd when I was 4 months old when she noticed me twitching. I was diagnosed as having epilepsy aged 4 years, don't know why Drs could not diagnose earlier. I have a benign tumour from birth so I have had epilepsy all my life. I have had uncontrolled drug resistant epilepsy until I was 31 years and 8 months. My Neurologist referred me for an assessment for possible brain surgery. I had multiple tests to determine which side of my brain would respond post op whilst I was put to sleep with my right side awake conscious and my Left under anaesthesia then vice versa.
I was told following the results that I could have surgery and my seizures would be alot less. I could not be made seizure free due to the risk of death or a stroke.
The risk of death in surgery was 1 in 6,000 and the success rate of recovery from surgery was 99% . My wife and I decided to proceed with surgery and now I have fewer seizures but still take medication.
Pre op I had 144 absences a month. Post operation 5 a month but this year only 1 or 2 a month. I am taking 3 medications now as opposed to 2 pre op.
