I was on this for pain. Saw a new dr and they Dr told me to stop taking it because it's an "old people's drug" and she gave me nortriptiline instead. This seems to have the same effect on sleep and pain as the amiyriptiline but amitrip gives you a real bad hangover feeling in the mornings/most of the day. Nortriptiline doesn't seem to have this side effect.

Hi Stormy, only me. I was on amitrip, given to me as a preventative for my migraines. It did work I must say, I took 20mgs at bed time. Helped me sleep & stopped so many migraine attacks but it did leave me "thick headed" in the mornings up til about lunch time. I also found it hard to come off them, withdraw symtoms such as shaking, feeling sick & panicky. But then what's not good for one might be brill for another. My friends husband has been on them for a while for back pain & he swears by them. Hope this helps x x

I take 40mgs at night, doesn't always help with either sleep nor pain I often wake up because either my hips or my knees are excruciating.Dr will not give anything else as every time Ihave gone back he just ups the dosage.

Sorry to hear that laney365. I don't know what's causing your pain but maybe you should go back to see another doctor. He can't just keep upping the dose surly. Hope you feel better soon.

Hey Guys,
Thank you so much I finally got it from the chemist today as they had to order it in, and looks like I might not be able to take it as I am anaphylactic and one of the things I have been warned about is Benzoates and salicylates, I have changed Dr's twice since my testing back in 2001 so I need to call him tomorrow as it was prescribed by a new Neurologist who didn't ask me if I had any allergies, and I totally forgot to mention it as it is on my note ( I am on his booked for memory problem too but in as much pain as I am it is kind of funny, and I been a nervous nelly so have over done it the past few days decorating was looking forward to a good night sleep tonight I am going to look up that other one, nortriptiline and see if he will give me this if it is more appropriate instead .... wish me luck x

No Change, apparently Amitriptyline is the best choice for me, but I have to take the smallest dose for a few days, to see if I have an allergic reaction, so 1ml of 25mg liquid, so it works out 5 mg for the first few days taken four hours before bed, then increase it too ten and if that is ok, after a few days I can take it at bed time, just to make sure I don't go in to anaphylactic shock in my sleep, scary time, but it has to be done.
Love light and peace x

Hi, I take 50mg at night for pain. It seems to help, as if I miss a dose for some reason (crappy memory). I really struggle by the end of the next day.
At first it made me feel sluggish on a morning, but now I'm fine. Doesn't touch me in terms of sleep, I'm a chronic insomniac though so not much does. I've just been prescribed mirtazapine for anxiety and depression and told that will help me sleep! That said, being an insomniac for so many years I function pretty well on a little bit sleep and not sleeping doesn't really stress me out.
Alongside amitriptyline, I wear a 20mcg Bupenothrine patch which stays on 7 days, and take tramadol when my pain levels peak! I think amitriptyline only works well in conjunction with other good pain meds.
Hope you feel a little better soon.

Hey guys and welcome Dinky,
Took it for 5 days and had to come off it, I was in agony and couldn't keep my eyes open , SO I have gone back on my old routine, until I get sent to the Pain clinic, as I was told only take the Amitriptyline once at night, only took 10 mg, I had been on my old routine for so long that I hadn't realised exactly how much pain I was in, As it had became habit as soon as the pain started I would just pop a pill, rather than waiting till it got bad.
At least I have more information to give them, on the up side, although from what I am gathering from other people I should have been given something for during the day too, I am also waiting to see a spinal surgeon, so he may disagree with the Neurologist as to where the pain is coming from. I am sure it is down to the disk degeneration in my neck, but the Neurologist is sure it is Neurological pain caused by ME.
Personally I don't care what the label is last week really knocked me for six, I just need someone to help me sort it out fully.
Thanks you all for you help and support.
Love light and peace x

Hi everyone I have been on amitriptyline for 14 years now and take 100 mg per night , I am also on other pain meds so not sure if this helps or not, it used to but was not enough on its own.

I take amitriptyline 20 mg at night, it helps with staying asleep, getting back to sleep after pain wakes me up. The wooly head side effect in the morning disappears quickly.

Hi Guys,
Been recently given a provisional Diagnosis of ME/CFS and have been given amitriptyline 20 mg to take at night, with the pretence it will help with Sleep & Pain and hopefully that should help improve my memory and concentration , Has anyone got any experience of it for this ?
