Hi everyone
Ive recently become a member on 16/08/2015. I also was diagnosed with an over active thyroid and had radio-iodine treatment to correct this. in my case I was also given a suppresent drug to kill the thyroid off which when left unmonitored left me really ill. I could not explain how I felt to my family, I was in a black hole with a big black cloud above me and could not see a way out. I went from a person who everyone went to for help and advice to a person who did not want to know anything bad in the world, who was frightened to go out alone, not sleeping, severe nightmares and frightened of what the future might hold. All because I was a person who was given a thyroid suppresent drug to treat a thyroid that did not exist. I could go on no longer and as my next revue was not for 6 months I paid a visit to my family doctor and tests revealed that I should never have been left taking this medication without supervision and he immediately prescribed Thyroxine 150mg and contacted my consultant. I feel a lot better now and my quality of life is greatly improved. I said nothing to anyone and kept my symptoms hidden for so long because I felt ashamed and a weak person. I have to be the strong one as our daughter has been disabled since birth (27) and the future is always a worry for us, I also come from a large family who have always come to me for help and advice and there were times when all I have wanted to do was crawl into a hole, but stupidly I hid this and helped them with there problems. I have also had cancer of the mouth and my left kidney has failed but is back on the road to recovery, I have also had chronic back and leg problems also a lot of fatigue some of which were linked to an over active throid but there is always someone worse off than you. Anyway....yes I also cannot stop putting on weight and my thick head of hair is also on the thin side....so this is a common characteristic I can presume. I hope to hear from other people with similar symptoms.

Hi all, Having tried thus far fruitlessly to begin a discussion in a few other threads, I will try this one to see if any fellow underactive thyroid sufferers are out there and would like to keep in touch on here. I was diagnosed in 2001, and am on 150microgrammes of Thyroxine daily. The worst symptoms that affect me are inability to lose the excess weight however healthily I eat, and the fact that my previously thick head of hair has become thin and wispy, which is really knocking my confidence. I was wondering if anyone else with this condition is experiencing this, and has anyone found any good tips to help with weight loss or hair thickening? Thanks in anticipation.

I'm only on 100mg a day but I was losing so much hair I thought I would end up bald. I discovered Petrol Head and Maiden Hair shampoos and conditioners from [This content has been moderated by an administrator] my hairs fuller than it was before and its gone from shoulder length to almost waist length.
If you're in a country they don't post to, try to find a shampoo with no sulphates or parabens and add a few drops of rosemary oil, it helps but its not as good as the MCC ones.
I totally relate to the weight gain.

I'm only on 100 mg but know exactly what you mean about the weight! I originally was diagnosed with over active thyroid and had radio-iodine treatment to correct this. It 'over-corrected' as I was warned it probably would. I've definitely got thinner hair now as well, although as it was quite thick before this isn't too much of a problem for me at the moment.

Good to know it's not just me.
I've had under active thyroid for a couple of years and am totally unable to lose the weight I put on before my diagnosis. I've been using Slim Fast (with doctors permission) for about a year but I feel like people are laughing at me because I've lost nothing.
I've also lost a tonne of hair and although my hairdresser has been great and restyling to try and make it look thicker and fuller it knocks the confidence when you get up and your pillow is covered in your hair, then your hairbrush.
Anyone had any luck with any eating plans as I'd love to be able to shift a bit.

It seems we all now know that we have something in common. All these symptoms seem the same. This is something I never knew existed, but it is a comfort to know that there are people going through exactly the same symptoms as you. I suppose we can all help and advise each other in that respect. I do hope people will keep commenting on this forum. But then again as we know there is always someone worse off than you so we must be grateful for what we have.

I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid when I was 21 (17 years ago) and have been on varying amounts of Thyroxine over the years. Currently I am on 175mg, but I am severely depressed after losing my Dad in March and I don't feel that the medication is helping me at all.
There was a period in my life (not so long ago) when I decided to get fit and healthy, joined slimming world, then started zumba, joined exercise classes, tried the paleo diet and ran a half marathon. I was at my goal weight and maintained it for a good year. I was down to 75mg Thyroxine, had bags of energy and was high on life. I therefore know this is possible and what I am capable of, what we are all capable of if we put our minds to it. Sadly, I had a miscarriage and my dad got diagnosed with PHA, COPD and lung cancer and in the space of another year, I put all the weight back on, my hair is falling out, my feet look like shit, my inner ears are dry and itchy, my eyes are puffy, I have zero sex drive, I am constantly exhausted and the prospect of getting out of bed makes me want to stay in bed.
I know that my Dad would not be happy with me "wallowing" so I am now on a mission. I am going to get my fitness back. I am going to lose that weight, I will not let this condition beat me. Whether you are interested or not, I will post updates here and you can join in with me if you like...

@NatalieJane thanks for your post, I didn't realise the itchy dry ears were thyroid related. They're driving me potty.
Good luck reaching your goal, I'd love to exercise but with ME, COPD, Fibromyalgia, Ehlers Danlos, Pots and Osteoarthritis on my long list of diagnoses I can't do much.

OK so, I had a busy day yesterday. I went for some Shamanic Counselling - which was brilliant, then I went down to my local "bootcamp" and did a class for the first time in ages. Today I have eaten "overnight oats" for the first time. Feeling really motivated.
How is everyone else's week going?
