@Courtney_J My OA is particularly bad in my back and hands, so it can be painful trying to exercise. But I know it's important. My consultant recommended I see a physio to show me ways to exercise, but I haven't gone through with it yet. For now I try to walk as much as I can and I sometimes will do yoga with my girlfriends, the stretching is supposed to be good for the joints.

I do a lot if exercises to videos to keep my joints supple. They certainly do help. So e ercises are very important. Courtney you should explore the physio option and know the right exercises to do. Hi Bobjen, I have Osteo Arthritis among other things but can't walk far as have Parkinson's and CIDP which has caused major problems with my legs and I fall. I have had Arthritis for about 20 years so know you should keep moving even when you don't want to. I have had one hip replacement and two operations on my spine. I don't know about you but I have got used to the pain. The only time I have been out of pain was when in hospital for back surgery when they could give me huge doses of pain relief

I am lucky that I have a very high pain threshold. I have pain for years and I think it makes you live with it. Once I accepted it was something I was going to have to live with it it became easier to bear. I also have friends that have far worse than me and that helps as well by helping them

I have it bad in my shoulder from an old sport injury, so that eliminates raquet sport for me which were my sport of choice... Now I may be in for a hip replacement so that may be it for me. I've heard that swimming and pool aerobics are good because it takes the pressure off the joints. Has anyone tried that?

Yes, I used to do aqua aerobics before the Pandemic and it certainly did help. In the water you are weightless and you don't feel that intense pain whilst exercising in water. I definitely recommend it.

I would love to go swimming again! Had a heart attack nearly two years ago and two ops to have stents fitted. Was just about to take up swimming again but at my one year check up was advised against it! Told to leave it for two years and only go accompanied by a first aider and the pool must have a defibrilator present, Anyone else been told this? I am ready to go but it's off-putting

@Ladybear
I can understand that it is off putting. Most of the swimming pools to have Defibrillators and the attendants are very helpful if you make those arrangements with them when you join. If you do take up this offer, you must remain calm and not anxious, as anxiety can bring on an attack. I do not know what your heart condition is but I am a Retired qualified nurse and if you care to share, i might know more about it.
Wishing you good luck, what ever you choose to do

Hello everyone,
How are you?
While many may worry that exercising with OA could harm the joints and cause more pain, research shows that people can and should exercise when they have osteoarthritis. In fact, exercise is considered the most effective, non-drug treatment for reducing pain and improving movement for OA patients!
So, how do you stay active with OA? What do you do for exercise? Are there any activities that you find more adapted for people with osteoarthritis? Have you noticed any improvements to your OA following your exercise?
