Crohn's disease (CD) is an inflammatory bowel disease that causes symptoms like severe stomach aches, acidity, diarrhea and fatigue other than malnutrition in some cases. This is a life long chronic condition that affect the patient's stomach lining and significantly impact the quality of their life. Dr Tariq Patel, Gastroenterologist at Wockhardt hospital says these are the six types of foods CD patients should avoid to keep their symptoms under control.

Raw fiber rich food: Crohn's disease patients are advised not to consume raw vegetables or salads unless they are well cooked or boiled so it becomes easier for them to digest it. This is because their intestines tend to become very narrow and eating raw, fibrous foods can worsen symptoms like bloating, stomach aches and indigestion.

Fruits or vegetables with many seeds: Avoid watermelon, strawberries, tomatoes, and even raspberries as these fruits and vegetables can worsen your diarrhea when you have CD. Other than that, Dr Tariq says even mangoes and apples are a complete no-no as they are known to cause digestive problems. 'A low fiber and low residue diet is ideal for a CD patient which contains carbohydrates that are easy to digest,' he says.

Foods that contain wheat: Another major no-no for CD patients is food that contains wheat. Avoid eating rotis or chappatis and bread. Instead switch to a rice diet.

Onions and garlic: These popular food items are also known to aggravate the symptoms of CD in most patients. So stay away from garlicky food items and anything that contains onions to stay on the safer side.

Milk and milk products: Most CD patients are also lactose intolerant and milk and milk products like cheese could be your worst enemy because they cause a lot of gas and bloating.

Spicy food: Foods that contain too many chillies or excessive spices can also aggravate the symptoms of CD.

Deep fried foods: Dr Tariq says that CD patients who are also suffering from acidity should avoid deep fried foods. However, those who don't have acidity, can have fried food in moderation.

I've found I'm struggling just recently eating anything, i end up in agony with everything I eat.

I'm waiting to start a new treatment though as I've been on Vedolizimab for just over a year and it isn't working, so maybe that's why things are particularly difficult at the moment.
