Cancer is a personal journey that no one can really help or support. While physical help with resolving symptoms as treatment progresses is useful. Coming to terms with our illness is very personal, allowances by family and loved ones with our fears when necessary.

It happened at wrong time, my children grieving, their Dad had died 7 months before, I was left to get on with it, no support from Cancer support groups, I felt I was rushed into it, no thought of how I was going cope.
The hospital was 30 miles away, out of reach to get to, the staff were not supportive.
I moved to be near a hospital with facilities I need.
Having breast Cancer in Notti ngham was a nightmare,, if you didn't live near hospital, and no transport, I had no family and my friends were too old to fight the traffic through the town.

After my mastectomy my friends got together and gave me a hamper of hair and body products and flowers. I was delighted. It gave me a lift. I had a drainage tube when I came out of hospital. I couldn’t wash my hair properly but my local hairdresser offered me a wash and blow dry free of charge and came to my house to do it. which I accepted and I felt so good after it. It’s the little things that I found I appreciated. An extra cuddle, a careful thought from family and friends. Being able to drive 🤗. I agree with robjmckinney it is a personal journey. For me staying positive is important. I do have my down days I don’t ignore but then I move on. Some family members supported me others didn’t know how. That’s life. Keep strong, be positive, put yourself first xx

After I was diagnosed my partner at the time said she would always be there for me no matter what happened in our relationship. Our relationship ended just after my first operation which was in May 2017 but she was good to her word, 4 operations and 21 months on she is still my best friend and still cares for me helping me to cope with everyday life and mundane chores even though I have now got back with a lady I first fell in love with 33 years ago, unfortunately she was engaged to another guy then but is now single again and we got back in contact through F/B last month, we are still very much in love with each other after all those years apart, she knows about everything i've been through and is very sympathetic and supportive to me so my future is looking rosy, she's even asked how long do I think we will have with each other and I said hopefully another 20 / 25 years which will make me mid 90's and her 80. Wish me luck on my new adventure please as i'm not going to let what happened to me hold me and stop me enjoying life to the full again :-)).

I must admit the shock of being diagnosed with prostate cancer hit hard first of all but I've had great support from my wife and my two girls and their husbands. My hospital, Southend-on-Sea University hospital have been absolutely brilliant throughout and is only 5 miles away from me, guess I'm really lucky. I've got a great bunch of friends who I can talk to and as my cancer is not as bad as some I can still enjoy going out and travel away with my wife and friends. Yes I am extremely lucky.

When someone has been diagnosed with cancer it can be difficult for family members or loved ones to know how to react appropriately or in a way that is going to make someone feel comforted. Buying something that could aid the patient throughout their cancer journey is always a kind and thoughtful gesture to make to support someone.
So my questions; what did you find indispensable throughout your cancer treatment? Or what would you have liked to receive, in hindsight? Or, what have you given the loved ones in your life after their diagnosis? Let us know and share your tips!
