Getting support for palliative cancer care: Can you share any advice?

My mum has lung cancer and she's loosing her battle now after a 3 yr fight.

She's very week and going up stairs to the toilet has become very difficult for her. Trying to get a loan of a stairlift from the palative care nurses and hospice but it all comes down to money yet my family have been putting into cancer and leukemia charities for the best part of 20 years but when it comes down to it they are dragging their feet and I don't know what to do or where to turn. Does anyone have advice.

Try local charities, or your local council adult services, I found them to be extremely helpful and was assessed within days, had equipment within a week or two. Sometimes companies supply equipment like stair lifts free of charge, to people in need, but you have to be referred by a health professional.

When my dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2009 our GP surgery and the local Sue Ryder hospice were wonderful. Everything he needed was supplied before he was sent home from hospital; he lived in a first floor flat, so it wasn't possible to fit a stair lift even if he had been capable of going out.

I would definitely have a word with your mum's GP or is there any way that she could be downstairs with a commode? If your property is rented, the landlord, whether private or social housing, could put a wet room in for her. There are grants available and most social housing landlords are only too happy to help if you ask, but you have to reach out to them first.

@Mymum70‍ I've just seen your post and my heart goes out to you all. I've been retired for a number of years now but was a Qualified Nurse, working in Palliative Care. I have just checked a couple of websites to review if/what may possibly be available and it appears (although there are NO unfortunately no guarantees in this life) that your Mum may be potentially entitled to Continuing Health Care (CHC)? CHC can be extremely "problematic" to actually obtain, probably even more so than when I was in active practice but may be a possibility? CHC can potentially ease a persons' financial burdens but your Mum will, more than likely, need a very experienced Social Worker to navigate this? Perhaps @Mymum70‍, are you (or someone close to yourself/your Mum) able to research this via the internet? I am a little surprised and sorry that you haven't found your Palliative Care Nurse(s)/Hospice team as helpful as you would like but in the present and ongoing global situation, ALL needs of EVERY description appear to be far outstripping ALL countries' available resources. Sending my very best wishes x

@Mymum70 I am not sure where you are now and how you have resolved matters about getting additional support. If the system is to long winded through the NHS and Charities you can buy many items online through Ebay and Amazon at low prices. But the NHS should be able to supply a hospital bed with lift capabilities and air mattresses to reduce bed sores. Try your GP who should put you through to community nurses who have access to lots of equipment. There is also your local hospice who also provide support in the community and overnight care to give you a break if community nurses have not been assigned.
