On 30mg a day. Find they work to a certain level, then bang, Acid Reflux flairs up again. Have a Hiatus Hernia which makes the sphincter at the top of my stomach continuously open. Does anyone else have throat issues because of 'acid'?

I have been taking Lansoprazole for about 10 years they help to a point. If I miss one it is usually obvious after  coup!e of hours. I do not have constant relief and use gaviscon when needed. I was also on ranitidine before bed but that med has been withdrawn from the market. When I was taking all 3 I felt much better.

I too have an hiatus hernia, and I can have an awful cough due to the acid, it is known as a Gerd cough which I had once none stop for 6 months, I get it intermittently and it can wear me out.

I was a candidate for surgery but  refused, for various reasons.

I think people are generally just left to get on with this, I have seen a gastro consultant who as lovely, I had all the necessary tests, meds adjusted and basically that was it.

Love to hear anyone else's experience

Lottie:)

I'm on 30mg Lansoprazole but find I constantly have fluid in the throat and problems with swallowing. I was also diagnosed with a hiatus hernia but the epilepsy medication, Topiramate, made mine worse. I've since gone off Topiramate but still have heartburn.

I have suffered heartburn since 2000 (thanks to years of NSAIDs) when my GP put me on 15 mg of Lansoprazole, which helped for a few years and then I began to get heartburn and indigestion, as well as reflux and when I coughed a taste of blood. Had an endoscopy, in 2014, which diagnosed a slight hiatus hernia, but nothing else and my GP upped Lansoprozole to 30mg; fast forward to 2020 and I had an awful bout of what I now know to be oesophageal spasm, I honestly felt like I was having a heart attack, it was awful. The pain was like nothing else I have ever had and all I can think to describe it is cramp, which won't go off, no matter what you do; breaking out into a cold sweat and feeling nauseous goes with it too. A phone call with my GP in January rang alarm bells, due to a family history of stomach and pancreatic cancer I was fast tracked for another endoscopy, which failed thanks to the spasms. A CT scan and barium meal CT scan, showed me to have the oesophageal spasm, but also Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma!

So what I'm saying in this story, is please, if Lansoprazole doesn't take the heartburn away completely, see your GP ASAP, it could be an underlying symptom of something more.

@YorkshireJayne I'm going back reading comments as I'm at my wits end with problems since 11th March 2024! I've had terrible weakness, hoarseness and chronic coughing since. My doctor tried antibiotics but my chest is fine and no signs of infection. I put this down to GERD and he's now given 60mg daily for a week in the meantime. I can't sleep due to the coughing and am using an extra pillow in the meantime. I'm waiting for blood tests also to check thyroid as I'm hypothyroid also.

@lesmal Lansoprazole doesn't cause headaches, but it does cause dry mouth I find chewing gum a huge help.

If your reflux/heartburn is still there though, it needs investigating further. A cautionary tale:

3 years ago, I went to my GP because my heartburn/reflux wasn't controlled by the Lansoprazole I had been on for over 10 years; because there's a family history of gastric cancers, he referred me on the two week cancer pathway and I was seen for a scan within that two weeks. (I was initially sent for an endoscopy which failed) That scan showed enlarged lymph nodes, and a follow up biopsy, had me diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Follicular Lymphoma; a blood cancer, which I have for the rest of my life now. The upside is that I haven't had any treatment yet, it's an indolent cancer which has the ability to fluctuate and at the moment is in "remission" (6-9% of people this happens in!), but they see me every 6 months to check bloods and symptoms.

So please do insist on further investigation.

Thank you for your advice and information. I had an endoscopy a few years ago and was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia in the upper stomach. Depending on the epilepsy medication I've been on in the past the pain has been mixed but eases as I'm taken off another.

@lesmal Yes, I was diagnosed with a small hiatus hernia 11 years ago, so when my heartburn didn't stop I knew there was something not quite right. One of my pain meds causes it to be worse, but I can't just stop taking it unfortunately. An endoscopy can only pick up what is in your oesophagus not what's on the outside, so please be aware of that.

Thank you. I get bloods done every 6 months so will speak to doctor. I've got a terrible dose of flu at the moment and can hardly talk as my throat is so sore. I'm using home meds at the moment.

@lesmal That's great, it really is, but bloods don't always show there's something wrong. It annoys me that doctors rely so heavily on them. Mine had been good for years before all this...although the lot before my diagnosis showed that my red blood cells were high, indicating a gastric problem (no s*** Sherlock! LOL) so that's another reason my GP referred me. By contrast, the hospital (St James in Leeds) do take bloods each visit, but I also have a physical examination of my stomach and asked questions about any issues; frequent fevers/infections, skin rashes, lethargy, new pain etc. So (at the risk of sounding like a broken record!) please do ask for further investigation.

Oh! As an extra bit of info about Lansoprazole, It's now known to cause a lot of other health issues when taken for long periods of time. I can't remember what exactly, but not minor problems.

I have been taking Lansoprazole for about 6 weeks now; it definitely helps, but notice extreme tiredness, headaches and dry mouth/throat.

Am grateful to all our Pharmacists for keeping us well-medicated!

Please, please see your GP. The symptoms you describe, along with heartburn, can be indicators of something else.

I find sugar free chewing gum helps dry mouth

@YorkshireJayne‍... Thank you for your comments. I saw my doctor who increased dosage to 30mg daily. I also had an endoscopy which diagnosed a hiatus hernia. I am epileptic and have found epilepsy medication affects the heartburn and dry throat problem. I have since gone off 2 medications due to this.

Next time I'm able to see my doctor, I will be asking for advice.

@lesmal This is what annoys me about doctors, they just up the amount of medication without doing any further investigations. An endoscopy can only show so much and other things cause heartburn/reflux.

@YorkshireJayne‍... I also find certain foods cause the heartburn. I'm allergic to wheat, dairy and protein and have to take Ceterizine daily for these.

I've noticed recently that pastries etc are causing pain, so limit my intake now. I hope to see the doctor soon and request more investigation or change of meds.

Lansoprazole helps for a short while. I've found I still have heartburn and throat issues but put this down to Topiramate, an epilepsy medication, which made it worse. I'm off Topiramate now but think my heartburn will always be a problem.

Lansoprazole extra dosage didn't help in the end... I eventually had to get an edema from my GP to sort out constipation issues. I don't get heartburn but do struggle with irritable bowel and other stomach issues.  Dosage reduced to initial amount now.

Am on 30mg now of Lansoprazole; it works occasionally but I still struggle with heartburn and acid reflux every now and then. I've gone off 2 epilepsy medications which definitely made it worse.

Next time I see the doctor I'll request his advice abd perhaps another medication than Lansoprazole.
