I just remember when my mom tried to explain things to me, I already knew! HAhaha. I knew from my giggly little girlfriends that told me all about "starting". I was a late bloomer and didnt start until I was 16.
@Tchai44 I couldnt agree more about menopause !! I went through it in my mid 40's and WOW! The hair loss was what got me the most...and the dry skin, body changes, horrible sweating. AARRGGHHH! Thankfully I am all over that now, but when I was going through it, NOT FUN!!!

Hi all,I'm from Africa, Ovaherero trip, traditionally we are being told you ladies should behave if they start getting menstruation, is the sign of becoming a woman, so when i got it, i was a shame, but i knew it before.

Re periods or menstruated, No I was not told anything about periods.
My mother told me not to say anything to my brothers and don’t let any boy touch me, no explanation.
Conversations with friends and their older sisters was a mass of answers like “it’s like turning on a tap, not very helpful.

I was never told anything about periods I was a late starter I was 15 before I started mine and I was seventeen when I was raped I used to suffer with depression but nobody listened I was bullied at school from the age of six till I left school I only had my mum and I couldn't tell her because she had enough to worry about my dad as he spent 28 years in a mental hospital and I didn't want to worry her ,my health was always bad I suffered with brittle bones headaches sickness every time I ate something I felt sick it wasnt until I was 49 that they said I was a coeliac and everything I ate as a child poisoned the lining in my stomach so now I have to be really careful to not to eat anything with gluten or wheat as it can cause real problems, when I was a child I always suffered with infections ,in my ears but nobody new I was deaf in both ears so at an old age I had to have an operation on my left one and I also wear two hearing aids to help me maybe if things had been checked when I was a kid I wouldn't have the problems that I have now just to tell you my dad fell from his hospital window in 1980 and died and I had to go and identify his body also I lost my mum in 1995 of lung cancer and I looked after her for six months as well as going to work but she was my best friend, mum ,sis, bro to as I was an only child

I was just 11 years old when I had my first period. I remember coming home from school with terrible stomach cramps. Went to the toilet as soon as I got in the house, but when I wiped i found blood on the paper and it just wouldn't stop. I was crying because I thought I must have cut myself somehow. Then my Sister started knocking the door, telling me to hurry up because she needed a wee. I told her I couldn't move, I'd hurt myself and was bleeding Then my Sister went and got my Mum.Thats when I found out about pperiods. My Mum gave me a big white thing and told me to put it in my knickers, (DR WHITES).I remember telling her i didn't want to, My Mum told me i had to, and then she sat down with me and explained to me all about periods and told me it would happen every month. It meant that I was becoming a woman. I said i don't want to be a woman yet.I only just had my 11 th birthday, hadn't even started High school.i remember my Mum just smiled and said (You've got no say in the matter Gloria, it just happens. )I hated that time of the month, especially as every period was heavy. When I started High school and we had to do P.E. or games, i had to sit and watch if i was on a period and i used to think everyone was looking at me and knew why i was sitting on the side instead of taking part, especially the Boys.I was so embarrassed.Today it's talked about openly. But 60 years ago it wasn't spoken of. And I still didn't know about sex or where babies came from, not until I was about 14..Oh Boy.What a difference it is today. GLOJO

My mum was very good and gave me talks on puberty, what to expect and how to deal with it. She was very wise and I miss her dearly. She understood my fear with my epilepsy at 16 so I think she was more supportive than perhaps some other mums were during that time.

I knew about periods from a very young age. I don't know how or who told me. I was in a home for "Handicapped Children" until I was 11. When my period started, my mum was at work, so I went to my Gran, to ask her for towels. It was then that I was told, they stop eventually. Later, I developed irritations, but my doctor only gave me creams, which didn't help. He then prescribed the pill, he wouldn't give me an examination. I suffered for years. Eventually, when I was giving a lift to my second oldest sister, to her gynecologist, I asked her to ask her doctor, if she would see me. Which she did, I was then given an exam, which showed per-cervical cancer. Which was successfully treated. But I was told that I had blocked tubes, and therefore I could come off the pill. I was still having a lot of pain. I then met my husband. I fell pregnant but lost my baby at 16 weeks. When I again, was seen by my gynaecologist, I was given a laparoscopy. When I woke up I was told I had severe endometriosis and I was told I would need a hysterectomy. I was then given HRT.

Hello ladies,
In many cultures, women's health can osmetimes be a "taboo" topic. Sometimes, conversations about periods and puberty aren't held in the most beneficial way for girls.
Was this the way for you? Was puberty and women's health discussed openly with you?
