No I didn't know anything about periods still I had my first one. I was just 11 and I was the first girl in my class to start. I think it's the way it was when I was 11 which is 56 ago now. I made sure my girls knew about them well before they started theirs.

My family was very poor and we were going through very tough times. Our diet lacked essential minerals and vitamins and I suffered sever anaemia. My periods didn't start till I was 14 and suffered severe back pains during periods and had to miss school because of it. I don't have daughters to educate them and my boys learnt about the birds and the bees from school at very young age. They were rather embarrassed when I tried to educate them and they already knew than what I could teach them from their piers No,I did not receive any health education during my teens.

Hi Jo, Hi I had all the information that it should be. I was 19 and I never had a period and my Mum spoke to me that it needed investigation. She never thought that I could be pregnant. So off I went to GP then Gynaecologist. Oh well at 19 I had genetic test done ..... I was born with no ovaries or uterus so I never had a Period and although I am a “complete” Woman I can not have Children!!!!!
Then at 44 I was diagnosed with a Neuromuscular Disorder SMA Spinal Muscular Atrophy type 4!!!!!
Talking about luck ehhhhhh!!!!

My Mother never told me anything so when I started my periods at 9 you can imagine how terrified I was but that was 60 years ago. All she did was to go and buy me some Dr. Whites pads. I was given more information from my elder Sister.

@wednesday @nineteen_gale @alicat @Trudij @Izzyjamal @millerkaren Thank you all so much for sharing, it is very interesting to learn about women's different experiences with something that can be quite traumatising (first period etc) if you aren't fully informed.
What were your experiences? Can you relate to what the other members have said? @Maggie-mae @lesmal @JazzyC @SandraFoster @josie42 @flo1960 @Yank34 @bobjen @maddoglady @joanne62 @sherd1 @MandyG

I was brought up with my grandmother until I was 12..nothing about life ever got mentioned about women's health. (I Learned in later life I wasn't expected to make it to my teens)
At 12 I was taken back to live with my mother and siblings and again womens health and sex was a very tabu subject I didn't start my period until I was 17 a most horrible time... I made sure my two sons had more than enough knowledge on all subjects of human life that they wanted to know nothing was tabu for them.

Hello ladies,
In many cultures, women's health can osmetimes be a "taboo" topic. Sometimes, conversations about periods and puberty aren't held in the most beneficial way for girls.
Was this the way for you? Was puberty and women's health discussed openly with you?
