Hello all,

I haven't been on in a while since I've been busy, but with this coronavirus business I've become a bit worried. Since the virus is so hard on the respiratory system I'm worried that my inhalers (I'm on Ventolin and Qvar) are putting me at a greater risk. Do you think we should cut down our use of them? Especially the Qvar? I've heard that steroids really do a number on the immune system. Does anyone have any thoughts or advice?

I've been wondering this myself... I'm particularly worried about my preventer inhaler (pulmicort).

keep taking your inhalers your asthma need to be controlled even more so when covid19 pandemic affects your respiratory and can cause pneumonia.

I got an email from asthma UK telling me I should be shielding for 12 weeks as I'm on a steroid inhaler fostair, is this correct.

From what I understand those with asthma have to social distance. then there are those who are asthmatic that have to take extra steroids such as prednisolone frequently on top of steroid inhalers and preventatives these are on the high risk that have to be more stricter with their social distancing then there is those asthmatics that have severe asthma who will have to be shielded, this is my understanding as advice on the uk direct gov site .

those that need to be shielded here in the uk will get letters from the nhs advising them of this and what support is out there for them. Hope this helps

update asthma uk have now got a list of medication inhalers that have doses of steroids that will hopefully help explain if you fall into shielding categories.

Hi although my asthma is usually controlled the stress of the coronavirus pandemic is making my symptoms worse, Im tight chested and cough at night and am just so tired all day. Im finding it difficult to establish whether its my asthma or symptoms of covide-19. Can I opt to self isolate and will I still get SSP? My asthma is currently all over the place at the moment, using by blue inhaler more than ever.

@Frusnup You should contact your gp if you are using more of your reliever refer to you asthma care plan and follow that but if you think it could be symptoms of covid19 call 111 or use 111 online ,like you I have been anxious also which has increased as I am now in isolation but if we follow advice given and do what we are meant to then we can all keep each other safe and hopefully get this virus under control. Hope your feeling better soon.

Hi I new i take a blue and brown inhaler. I was ill Monday Tuesday and Wednesday

Monday I got aches like if you have a sickness bug and getting very cold. By afternoon I had a coughing fit. No form like usual.

Then same till today still coughing tempture went down. Got headache today.

My gp and 111 told me only if I could not breath or gets worse they will have me in. Isolated 2 weeks as live with someone.

Took inhalers and blue one helped some. I don't no if I have it or something eles with no tests available. I have a very crock voice today.

So that's me and my asthma and possible infected.

Systemic Steroids (tablets and injections) do affect the immune system. But inhaled steroids (preventers) work directly on the lungs, and dont have much/none effect on the immune system. DO NOT stop the preventers without a GP's advice to do so. It is very important to keep taking these. If in doubt, talk to a pharmacist, as they will be easier to get hold of than your GP.

@carolineF hi I have been in isolation since 16/3 gp says I’m symptomatic of covid 19 on week two chest tight cough temp on and off no test unless I need to be admitted to hospital have went through all emotions isolation I’m finding hard but I’m hanging in there.
