Hello @Thumbo
How are you feeling today?
Thank you for starting this discussion, and I'm sorry to hear about your osteoarthritis diagnosis. Generally, it's advisable to avoid heavy physical work that puts stress on your thumbs, even with splints, to prevent any further strain on both affected and unaffected joints. Splints can offer temporary relief, but they don't address the underlying issue and may not prevent your condition from worsening due to stress on the joints. It might also be worth it to consult with your rheumatologist for personalized advice.

@Somya.P Thanks for your reply.
So my aim now is to avoid making the condition any worse in both affected and currently unaffected joints in my thumbs and fingers.
Ah well, it gives me an excuse to cut back on the heavy gardening, etc. :-)

I have recently started developing osteoarthritis in both of my thumbs (one thumb has it at the top joint, the other at the next joint down. Note: not the Basal Joint, instead the next one up, the 'thumb knuckle'). I've had loose ligaments for all of my life and now I'm apparently starting to pay for that.
Should I now be avoiding heavy physical physical work even if I can temporarily splint the thumb joints or avoid putting excess stress on the thumbs?
In other words now that it's started in the thumb joints, is continuing the physical work going to make things worse in the currently unaffected joints? Or will it develop (or not) irrespective of any physical work? What's the usual outlook under such circumstances?
