Thyroid eye disease (TED), also known as thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy, is an eye condition often linked to thyroid disorders, particularly Graves' disease. It occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the muscles and tissues around the eyes, causing inflammation. This can lead to swollen eyelids, bulging eyes (a condition called exophthalmos), and symptoms such as dryness, discomfort, or double vision.
