Another cause can be having pneumonia as a child, when lungs are not fully matured.
I stopped smoking over 30 years ago and still have the misfortune to have bronchactersis.

Hi I didn't know that I had pneumonia when I was a child so possibly this was a contributing factor

@Ninja53
Have you been to a physio given you an airway clearance plan for phlegm(breathing exercies) and an accerpela(pic)
Its the chest infections that get me,I used to get them every month/six weeks- been better recently
I original was given tablets to help clear phlegm but didnt get on with them.

No never been to physio but have been prescribed antibiotics to take every other day also have an emergency pack of steroids and stronger antibiotics in case of infection. I have also been prescribed a new inhaler "Incruse" which works well and prevents chest from tightening. I use Ventolin very rarely.

The day before yesterday I went and saw NHS for my rehabilitation exercise he told me that I wasnt to do all the exercises but I would benefit for the group talks as it would be more beneficial for me he was pleased with my heart rate at the time but told me to only do what I can do so I start with my talks on the 1st of July so hopefully I will understand more about my copd emphysema and how I can control my breathing and coughing because I only have to talk and I start coughing so fingers crossed it will do me some good

Hi , I feel completely in the dark now about what’s actually wrong with my lung. I had swine flu when that was doing the rounds and I had to beg for a diagnosis for that. I have an inhaler, Fostair 100/6 who settles it down for a while and I take Carbocisteine 375 mg too.
I was told I had Bronchiectasis at a meeting with a consultant and he showed me the holes I the bottom of my lung from CT scan. This gets me down more than my multiple myeloma!.

Roselilly, I see you get infections regularly the same as I do. When I told my Consultant that I would die of a chest infection and not cancer, he took me seriously and it was him that put me onto the Consultant that said I had Bronchiectasis.He was the one that prescribed Fostair, which has helped no end.

Hi just joined with various ailments one of which is bronchi ecstasies. I find this very disabling especially in the morning, ie: shortage of breath and excessive mucous. Also I have to use a mask at night to assist with my breathing due to sleep apnea which affects me during the day ie: tiredness. I have smoked 23 years ago but I am told this is the major cause, took no notice all those years ago.
