Hi Asking_Asylum
I would say that the best thing for you do is get on the dafne programme it's a 5 day course that will teach you carb counting it really is worth the time as it gives you the freedom that you need to eat as you want.

Yes you would need to go on a carb counting course. Your diabetes nurse should be arranging that for you. You will get all the necessary advice and info there. The course is fantastic and I would advise you to purchase a Carbs n Cals book by Chris Cheyette & Yell Balolia. It is a great buy and is very handy to have if you are on holiday abroad or at a local restaurant for a meal. Though it is advised to only use this if away from home. At home meals should be carb counted. From my experience with my son a higher carb ratio is needed at dinner time to cater for him eating a sugary bun! He knows to limit his sugary foods as they can leave you a little on the high side. Perhaps when he gets on the insulin pump he may be able to eat a little more sugary foods. Time will tell. All the best with everything. Just take care of yourself and you will be grand.

I'm 18, recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, last month. I was wondering if I can eat and drink what I want as I am on insulin. Obviously not proper energy drinks or that stuff, but things like sweets, full fat coke, sugar free red bull. I had full fat coke before hand and it made my sugars go lower, and I feel fine when my sugars are high. Last time my sugars were 26.8 and I felt fine, I didn't feel as ill as I did before I went into hospital. Just need to know, as people think I don't understand, and treat me like a kid because of it. I just want to take control of my own diabetes.
