That's a difficult one! I was diagnosed aged 49, so the question of fertility wasn't an issue. I also was very lucky in that I was very healthy and didn't have any other illnesses or conditions to contend with.
I suppose for me the biggest culture shock was suddenly becoming a patient, I did and still do find that incredibly difficult to deal with.
I've been shocked by how much cancer treatment has impacted my life and how much of who and what I was has had to change. I've been scarred both physically and emotionally by it all and I don't think I've emerged as a better person!

Hi I was 66 when I was diagnosed and the impact of that was because of the type I had to have chemotherapy and radiotherapy and the consultant remarked that often they cannot give chemo to my age group or over. Luckily I was git and on very little medication. Which begs the question - what if I had not been?

Diagnosed at 65, only needed surgery & radiotherapy, which I was very thankful for. Thought I had handled it well until my first yearly appointment & I was told I was clear, cried buckets, couldn't believe how much I had kept my feelings & emotions inside, think it might be better to openly talk & discuss how we are feeling & how the treatment we receive us effecting us. Just my opinion.

Dear members,
First of all I would like to thank those of you who have taken part in our poll "How old were you when you were first diagnosed with Breast Cancer?" that was online until today. I would also like to encourage those who did not answer the poll question to do it next time: this way we can get more answers and thus a better idea about how Carenity members cope with their condition.
If you have a suggestion for the next poll, don't hesitate to let me know - in a comment below, or via a private message.
Now, here are the results of the last poll.
Breast cancer diagnosed in middle-aged and older adults
Almost 76% of the respondents were diagnosed at the age of 41 to 60, while nationwide half of breast cancer cases happen to be diagnosed in women over 60 years old, according to Breast Cancer Care UK. Among our respondents only 18% were diagnosed aged 61 to 70, and 3% were 70 years old and older at the time of diagnosis.
However, breast cancer can also develop much earlier: of the 62,000 cases of breast cancer in the UK per year, about 5,000 cases are diagnosed in women under 45 years old. Among our respondents, only 3% were diagnosed in their thirties, and no one in their twenties.
Impact of breast cancer depending on the age of the patient
The diagnosis can be perceived and accepted differently at different age, especially due to various problems that may follow the diagnosis: infertility in younger women, treatment interference with other conditions in older women, etc.
What about you? Do you think the age at which you were first diagnosed has had an impact on your psychological state, your other health problems or your treatment plan?
Do you find it would be easier for you to cope if you were older/younger when first diagnosed?
Thank you in advance for sharing your thoughts on this subject!
