Hi,
I've registered today because my 75 year old mother has been diagnosed with having a 'moderately fatty liver' and has moderately high blood pressure as well. Upon asking her GP for dietary advice all he said was to reduce red meat consumption to once a week - typical insightful brilliance from the NHS.
Practically speaking though, we are both lost as to what to do. You've got so called learned people advocating for ketogenic diets that have loads of meat and dairy in them and then you've got vegetarian/vegan folk saying meat is terrible and endorse whole grains... which are anathema to the paleo practitioners! All of these 'experts' point you towards their 'scientific' papers which purportedly find in favour of their chosen religion and yet just like with actual religion, they can't all be right when they're mutually contradicting one another!
So that's problem number one, onto problem number two...
Having looked through cookbooks for all the aforesaid dietary regimes and literally hundreds of recipes, a couple of things are clear to me as a person living in the UK:
1. Almost every meal listed looks absolutely disgusting.
2. They require weird and incredibly expensive ingredients that are hard to come by.
At her age, my mum is not going to suddenly turn around and alter her current diet 180 degrees to try and fit in with some ridiculous and arbitrary alien concepts. But at the same time we recognise that she needs to do something to try and reverse this thing.
Other than her being partial to cakes, chocolate, wine and tea with sugar - all of which she has stopped completely since her diagnosis - both of us felt her diet was already quite balanced and healthy; i.e. she eats fruit, veg and lean meats every day. True, she also does take cheese, milk, butter, potatoes, bread, rice, etc, but those are in small quantities. Now she's scared that they're all going to kill her. I don't want her subsisting on tasteless salads and I also don't want her throwing up, after spending a fortune and precious hours out of her life, making and consuming 'chicken katsu burgers with curried mayo' or equally horrendous garbage.
So, does anyone hear have some practical suggestions of SIMPLE meals that don't require such things as super-duper-ultra-kefir, made from raw, unpasteurised, organic milk from the last Arapawa goat, obtained during a solar eclipse for extra freshness? If not then I'd also appreciate some websites or any other advice from NORMAL people who have faced similar problems.
