Hello all, it's me again. Can you tell I'm having a hard time in lockdown? 😂

I was chatting with a friend who is new to diabetes on the phone yesterday evening and he mentioned reporting his diabetes to DVLA. I stopped driving for a different reason several years ago now but I didn't know it had to be declared! I guess I was "asleep" the day my GP informed me?!

I guess it's a good thing as it for the safety of everyone, but does anyone else feel like it's a slight invasion of privacy and all that?

I informed DVLA when I was originally diagnosed but because it was tablet only I had no licence restrictions.

I had an episode of Hepatitis E and had to use insulin injections I then had to report again and my licence was restricted to a 3 year renewal. After 18 months I was able to return to just my tablet control so no injections. When the licence expired I was able to get full licence entitlement again. Due to my age though it still needs renewal in 3 years as I hit 70.

Yes this a issue as you inform the DVLA of your diabetes and they put you on a three year renewable licence with a report from your GP. Sadly bought in by the EU whatever drugs you take for diabetes, if you are diet controlled you are not required to inform the DVLA. This came in a couple of years ago as a EU wide policy. In Britain we were only required to inform the DVLA if injecting but now includes oral medicine as well. You are required to test your blood when you drive and then every two hours. I informed the DVLA when I started injecting and was put on the 3 year licence but successfully appealed for my full licence back after loosing weight and going back to diet controlled. So if you drive and not informing the DVLA you are breaking the Law and your insurance may be void!
