Interesting, I always thought salt is merely a distraction as it can only affect blood pressure by a small amount. It is sad how food manufacturers are making food taste bad with terrible replacement additives, who knows what they do beyond tasting bad!

Conventional wisdom: Sodium consumption causes high blood pressure and heart disease, so we should eat less salt. Contrarian view: Added sugars are more to blame for high blood pressure and heart disease, so we should reduce them instead of sodium. High blood pressure, or hypertension, is the leading cause of both women and men: heart disease. Studies have shown that reducing sodium can help control blood pressure, but it is not the actual bad guy on the story, on the other hand sugar is the real culprit behind the explosive rate of high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases.
Animal and human studies have shown that a diet high in fructose affects blood pressure by increasing blood levels of insulin and sabotaging how the body metabolizes it. Insulin excess, in turn, overstimulates the sympathetic nervous system (the part responsible for the fight-or-flight response), which then can result in high blood pressure.
