Hi hettie,
At the end of the day you are working for your benefit and not your employer, if the work gets so bad it makes you or anybody ill, that is not a good thing.
You have a number of choices and it depends on what you actually want.
Have you been diagnosed with depression at all? Your employer has a contractual obligation to help with any form of disability.
Have you approached a supervisor at all? If you feel you are having problems of any type, you need to tell somebody. As you are training as a team leader your employers will be looking at how you tackle problems. If you can approach them with possible solutions as well as initial problems that will put you in a better light.
If you do have a breakdown you will be no help to anyone and be unable to work and there isnt a lot anybody can do about it!
Please dont self diagnose depression, if you are having unwanted mood swings that is generally a sign of something not being right and needs checking out.

I think you need to talk to your employer and tell them what is going on, and that you have to be able to sleep between shifts etc. I also think you should visit your doctor or other medical professional and tell them exactly how you're feeling. Don't diagnose yourself; you need an outside view as we don't often have the perspective to analyse ourselves.
As for taking time off sick... If you have a breakdown you will have to take time off. Mental illnesses are just as valid a reason to call in sick as physical illness is, people may just not understand it. That's why I would start by talking to your boss/employer and explaining the situation. They may be more understanding than you think. Also if you don't get anywhere talking to your boss/employer there is the option for the doctor to sign you off sick as it appears to be your job causing the issues.

Hi Hettie, I completely agree with the above comments. Your health and mental well being are the most important factors here.
You will be no good to anyone if you do not address this issue now. Looking on the outside in, you and your employers can't expect anyone to give 100% working such long hours with so little sleep. All employers have a obligation regarding your welfare.
You really do need to chat to your employers/HR regarding what is happening. A GP appointment really is advisable. Be totally honest with the GP; tell them exactly how you are struggling etc; especially regarding your emotional swings etc. I too thought that I was coping. It came to a point when i thought how easy it would be to walk out in front of traffic; that was when I had to admit that I wasn't coping and needed help. I am not saying that you will ever reach the point that I did , but it is better to get help now before you will have no option if you have a full blown breakdown.
I would seriously consider looking for a similar, less stressful job .
I do hope that you look after yourself and get help.

So I'm currently working night shifts and for reasons partly unknown to me, I completely broke down right at the start of shift last night and had to take an hour out. Crying in front of my boss and colleague was humiliating but I had no control over it. I've been feeling rocky for a while, but recently have just turned extremely bitter and impatient. I don't think I'm depressed, it's just like being on an emotional roller coaster. I came in today to find the new rota was up. I finish my last night shift at 5:30am this Friday (though we often work till about 6:30) and am then in work for 2pm Saturday and 10am Sunday. It's day shifts from then on. I also have other commitments on a Saturday morning (which they know I have commitments every Saturday morning). I don't get a day off for a week and don't even have one day for my body to switch from night shift to day shift. Like I say, I finish 5:30am Friday and need to be awake at 9:30am Saturday, then work Saturday afternoon. And they are all 6-9 hours shifts as well. I won't be able to stay awake after the night shift Friday but then probably won't sleep Friday night. I spoke to another colleague and he said he's in exactly the same position and broke down the day before! He reckons it's because we are the two they are training as team leaders, we have the most hours and the shifts are all over the place. They are pushing us too hard and wandering why we are breaking down. I really like the job but just cannot handle it right now. I'm worried I'm gonna break down to the point I physically can't work. I just wanted to walk out and go home earlier, it took a lot of will power to stay. I don't know what to do. I can't call in sick, cos I'm not technically sick, I just can't fricking cope with the work. And I doubt you can take time off for having a breakdown, you would probably just be sacked or have to have time off unpaid. I literally don't know what to do. It's too short notice for them to change the shift, I'm going to have to deal with it somehow. Anyone got any advice?
