Hello everyone,
Today I can share with you some great news concerning Alzheimer's disease research for which I received the press release:
The Swiss pharmaceutical group Roche has stopped clinical trials for a treatment for Alzheimer's disease, adding to the list of setbacks on this neurodegenerative disease on which medical research is struggling to make progress. Roche has thus terminated phase III studies, known as Cread I and II, on the crenezumab molecule, for an early form of the disease.
"Although these results are disappointing, they contribute significantly to our understanding of Alzheimer's disease," the group said in a statement.
The molecule continues to be researched in another program in Colombia in healthy subjects but with a hereditary risk of developing the disease, while other treatments are under study, Roche said.
There is no cure for the disease, as the drugs are limited to alleviating its symptoms without interrupting its progression. Despite significant financial resources for research, both public and private, clinical trials for Alzheimer's fail one after the other. Last year, there were several setbacks in research for Lundbeck, Takeda, Merck & Co, Janssen Biotech, AstraZeneca and Eli Lilly, among others. The American giant Pfizer had decided to simply abandon all its costly and ineffective Alzheimer research programs in order to focus its investments on other diseases.
